⚡ Reading Speed Test
Measure your English reading speed in words per minute. Compare with IELTS and PTE reading benchmarks.
The Academic Word List, developed by Dr. Averil Coxhead at Victoria University of Wellington, contains 570 word families that appear frequently across a wide range of academic texts. Research has consistently demonstrated that mastery of these high-frequency academic vocabulary items significantly enhances reading comprehension and writing quality in academic contexts. The list is organised into ten sublists based on frequency of occurrence, with Sublist 1 containing the sixty most frequently occurring word families. Educators and language learners alike have found that systematic study of the Academic Word List accelerates academic language development more efficiently than studying general English vocabulary alone. For students preparing for examinations such as PTE Academic or IELTS, a strong command of academic vocabulary is particularly important for the reading and writing components, where complex texts and formal essay tasks require both recognition and productive use of sophisticated terminology. Developing vocabulary breadth and depth through contextualised reading remains one of the most effective approaches to long-term language acquisition.
